The purpose of this site is to provide information on snowboard construction and on the small-scale services I offer to the snowboard and ski industry. It is my hope that the information on this site will enable others to improve their snowboard and ski construction processes.

About Me

I’m Mike Magruder, avid snowboard builder and president of Happy Monkey Snowboards, Inc. I started building snowboards in early 2002 as a hobby in my garage. One thing lead to another and I ended up incorporating Happy Monkey Snowboards, Inc. in late 2002 to prepare for selling snowboards to the public. One year later, after a number of prototypes and a season of on-snow testing I started selling custom snowboards to the public. What followed were many years of constantly improving my production process, working with different construction techniques, more prototypes, and a lot of custom boards sold. I built a number of tools to help with the snowboard production, including a CNC router and a pneumatic press. My formal education is in computer science, which enabled me to build a great deal of custom snowboard design software over the years. Everything I know about snowboard and machine construction is self taught via trial and error, the result of a few courses in precision machining at a local technical college, or picked up from tips on sites like skibuilders.com, grafsnowboards.com, finewoodworking.com, etc.

I have a personal blog with trip reports from snowboarding and snowmobiling, and other random things.

Happy Monkey Snowboards, Inc. is a small company that for most of its history has specialized in custom hand built snowboards. Recently we have stopped selling snowboards to the public and are in the process of transforming ourselves into a small service company for the snowboard and ski industry.
